On 20th December, 1914, the 1st Gloucestershire battalion, of 3 Brigade, 1st Division, left Outtersteene and marched to billets at Merville on their way to reinforce the India Corps which had lost ground around Festubert. On the next day, 21st December, 3 Brigade, with 1st Gloucestershire leading, moved forward via Bethune and in the fighting that followed at Festubert 1st Gloucestershire attacked over 500 yards on no-man’s-land to regain some lost trenches but at the cost of 150 casualties. One of these was Stephen Merritt who was killed. |
